A step-by-step breakdown of which visa to apply for, what documents you need, how long it takes, and how to handle extensions if your recovery takes longer than planned.
Which Visa Do You Need?
Most international patients entering China for medical treatment apply for one of three visa types:
M Visa (Commercial/Trade)
Not typically used for medical tourism. Avoid confusion — this is for business visitors.
L Visa (Tourist)
*Most common choice for aesthetic surgery patients.** Valid for single or double entry, typically 30–60 days depending on your nationality. Sufficient for most aesthetic procedures with standard recovery times.
*Required documents:*
J Visa (Journalist) / X Visa (Student)
Not applicable for patients.
Processing Time
Standard processing: 4–7 business days
Express processing (available in some countries): 2–3 business days
Rush processing: 1 business day (limited availability)
Plan to apply at least 3 weeks before your intended travel date to allow buffer time.
What If I Need to Extend My Stay?
If your recovery is taking longer than expected, you can apply for a visa extension at your local Public Security Bureau (PSB) office. MedHub coordinators can assist with the required medical documentation for extension applications.
Extensions are typically granted in 30-day increments and processed within 5 business days.
Visa-Free Countries
As of 2024, China has expanded its visa-free entry program significantly. Citizens of the following countries may enter visa-free for stays up to 15 days: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and several others.
*Always verify current visa requirements with the Chinese embassy in your country** as policies change frequently. MedHub provides personalized visa guidance as part of our service package.
