From Melbourne to Guangzhou: Sarah's Rhinoplasty Journey

An Australian patient shares her honest experience — from initial research to flying home 12 days later — including the things nobody warns you about and what she'd do differently.

In Her Own Words

Sarah, 28, is a graphic designer from Melbourne, Australia. She traveled to Guangzhou with MedHub China for an augmentation rhinoplasty and tip refinement. This is her story, lightly edited for clarity.

I'd wanted to change my nose since I was about 19. Not dramatically — I just wanted more definition at the tip and a slightly higher bridge. Nothing that would make me unrecognizable. Just... more like how I looked in my head.

I spent two years researching. I got quotes in Australia ($14,000+), looked at Korea ($7,000–$9,000 for what I wanted), and eventually found MedHub China through a Reddit thread where someone had shared their Guangzhou rhinoplasty results. The before/after photos were incredible — so natural.

The Consultation Process

I submitted my photos and medical history through MedHub's online form at around 11pm on a Tuesday. By Wednesday morning I had a response from a coordinator named Lily who spoke perfect English. She scheduled a Zoom consultation with Dr. Chen (not his real name) for the following weekend.

The consultation itself was 45 minutes. Dr. Chen used 3D simulation software to show me projected results from multiple angles. He was direct about what was achievable and what wasn't — which I respected. He told me my skin thickness would limit tip definition to a certain degree, and he didn't oversell.

The Trip

I flew into Guangzhou Baiyun International on a Sunday night. Lily met me at arrivals with a sign. Corny, yes. Incredibly reassuring, also yes.

The hotel was five stars and connected to the hospital via a covered walkway. I had not expected this. I had expected something more... clinical and stressful. Instead it felt like a wellness retreat with a surgical component.

*Surgery day:** I checked in at 7am. Anesthesia at 9:15am. I don't remember anything after counting to eight. Woke up at around noon in a private room with a warm blanket and Lily sitting next to me doing emails.

Recovery: The Real Part

Days 1–3: rough. Not in terms of pain — the medication covered that — but just disorienting. My face was puffy, my nose was taped, and I couldn't breathe through it. I watched a lot of Netflix.

Day 5: the tape came off for the first clean photo. I cried a little. Not from sadness — from relief. You could already see the shape.

Day 8: I walked around the hotel neighborhood for an hour. Had dim sum. Felt almost human.

Day 12: flew home to Melbourne. Wore a hat and sunglasses at the airport. Nobody gave me a second look.

Six Months Later

The swelling took about four months to fully resolve. Now, six months out, I can honestly say: this is exactly what I asked for. My nose suits my face. My colleagues noticed something was different but most couldn't identify what. A few thought I'd changed my hair.

Would I do it again? Without question.

What I'd Tell Anyone Considering This

*Don't scrimp on the service.** MedHub costs more than just booking a clinic yourself. It's worth every dollar. Having Lily there meant I never had a moment of confusion or fear about what was happening.

*Research your surgeon, not just the clinic.** The specific surgeon matters enormously. I watched videos of Dr. Chen presenting at conferences before I committed.

*Give yourself extra recovery days.** I planned 14 days and used all of them. Don't plan to sightsee on Day 10.

Sarah's rhinoplasty was performed at one of MedHub's Guangzhou partner hospitals. Results shown in the accompanying gallery are hers.
